Seeking Safety

Seeking Safety Women’s Group at Ray Recovery

Ray Recovery is thrilled to introduce a new women-only group based on the Seeking Safety curriculum, meeting on Fridays from 1-3 PM. This welcoming space is designed to promote healing and resilience, specifically supporting women navigating challenges related to trauma and substance use. Grounded in evidence-based treatment, Seeking Safety empowers women to develop safe coping strategies while minimizing the focus on past experiences. This approach has proven to be highly effective in helping individuals break free from patterns of self-harm and emotional distress. It’s a wonderful opportunity for women in recovery to foster a strong sense of safety and resilience in their lives, and we can’t wait to see the transformations that occur within this supportive community!

What Is Seeking Safety?

Seeking Safety is an empowering approach designed to support individuals facing trauma and substance use challenges in managing their emotions and stress. This innovative model addresses trauma and substance use together, allowing women to thrive in the present without revisiting past pain. The curriculum emphasizes skill-building, personal safety, and nurturing healthy relationships. By prioritizing safety, clients acquire techniques that help them stay grounded, effectively navigate triggers, practice self-compassion, and cultivate strong support systems. This approach promotes healing and resilience, fostering a brighter path forward.

Core Principles of the Program

The core concepts of Seeking Safety focus on practical, actionable steps that encourage healing and self-respect. Key principles include:

  • Staying safe: Learning strategies to avoid risky behaviors and build a secure environment.
  • Respecting oneself: Fostering self-worth through self-care and healthy boundaries.
  • Using coping instead of substances: Replacing harmful behaviors with positive coping mechanisms to address pain.
  • Making the present and future better: Emphasizing forward momentum and personal growth.
  • Trust-building: Developing trust in oneself and in supportive people.
  • Caring for one’s body: Valuing physical health as a crucial part of emotional and mental healing.
  • Seeking help from safe individuals: Building a strong, reliable support network.
  • Overcoming PTSD and substance use together: Working toward a life free from the influence of past traumas and addictions.

What to Expect During a Session

Each session is thoughtfully structured to ensure clients feel supported, engaged, and empowered to make progress. Here’s a brief look at the session flow:

Introduction and Check-In

Each session starts with a “check-in,” where participants reflect on their feelings and progress since the last meeting. This involves sharing any positive coping strategies they’ve used, discussing potential setbacks, and identifying any community resources they’ve reached out to. This check-in helps clients ground themselves, fostering an open environment for honest communication.

Quotation and Topic Connection

To engage emotionally with the theme of the day, a quotation is shared, and participants are encouraged to reflect on its meaning. This leads into the main session topic, which is thoughtfully connected to real-life experiences. Clients are encouraged to discuss personal challenges, role-play solutions, and explore how they can apply new strategies in their lives.

Exploring the Topic through Real-Life Application

The main portion of the session is dedicated to linking the day’s theme with the clients’ current challenges. Whether focusing on trust-building, self-respect, or coping techniques, participants are invited to share, reflect, and practice strategies relevant to their lives. This is an interactive segment designed to equip clients with tools to navigate their unique situations and reinforce the curriculum’s principles.

Closing and Check-Out

Each session concludes with a “check-out” where participants reflect on what they gained from the session, make a new personal commitment, and identify any community resources they plan to utilize. This wrap-up is vital in solidifying the day’s learning and promoting accountability.
