Anxiety Treatment in Cleveland
Anxiety disorders can vary in type and severity level. Just like addiction, anyone can develop an anxiety disorder. Without treatment, anxiety can be incredibly difficult to manage and has the potential to interfere with every aspect of your life. However, there are effective treatments for both anxiety and substance use disorders, and it is vital to seek help if you need it.
Ray Recovery provides flexible anxiety treatment in Cleveland. We’re here to help you or your loved one facing anxiety and addiction find a ray of hope and healing.
How Anxiety Relates to Substance Abuse
People with anxiety disorders experience substance use disorders at disproportionately high rates–rates higher than what could be due to chance alone. In many cases, people with anxiety who use drugs and alcohol do so to manage symptoms of anxiety, like racing thoughts, that can be challenging to live with. Anxiety disorders and substance abuse can also share some risk factors.
Although one may use substances in attempts to cope with anxiety, substances have the potential to worsen mental health concerns like anxiety in some cases. Considering how anxiety relates to substance abuse, addressing anxiety disorders as an underlying cause is critical when applicable.
Dual-Diagnosis Treatment Centers
Dual-diagnosis treatment centers like Ray Recovery are crucial for those facing mental health conditions like anxiety alongside substance use. Getting help for co-occurring disorders like anxiety while in addiction treatment can enhance quality of life, among other benefits. For example, improved psychiatric functioning and a higher chance of reduced or eliminated substance abuse.
Our Programs
Here are our programs and how they can help you or your loved one looking for integrated addiction and anxiety treatment in Cleveland. All of our programs operate on an outpatient basis. You are welcome to live at home while attending treatment at Ray Recovery, or we can help you find sober housing connections in the area.
Partial Hospitalization Program
The partial hospitalization program (PHP) at Ray Recovery is our highest level of care. Operating for a total of about 25 hours per week, clients in PHP attend treatment five days per week for about five hours of therapy per day. Addiction and anxiety treatment in Cleveland at our center may entail a combination of various therapies, including but not limited to:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
- Motivational enhancement therapy (MET).
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).
- Individual therapy.
- Family therapy.
- Group therapy.
We also provide medication management, holistic treatments, and other services. All clients at Ray Recovery get a personalized care plan, which may impact which approaches are used. Since PHP has a higher time commitment than our intensive outpatient program, lunch is provided for PHP clients.
Intensive Outpatient Program
Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) uses the same effective treatment methods as our PHP. However, IOP sessions are shorter and less frequent, meeting three days per week for about three hours on each treatment day. Due to the reduced time commitment required for IOP, this level of care can be ideal for those who:
- Need to balance responsibilities like work or college classes with treatment.
- Have finished PHP and are ready to step down to a lower level of care.
- Do not need a program as intensive as PHP.
Ray Recovery offers in-person IOP and a virtual IOP for those who feel that online sessions would better fit their needs. Additionally, specialized programs like our executive IOP are available for individuals who may have specific treatment needs.

Types of Anxiety Disorders and Their Symptoms
Anxiety disorders are among some of the most widespread mental health conditions. While this list does not include every type of anxiety disorder, here are some of the most common types of anxiety disorders in adults and their symptoms. It is possible to meet the criteria for more than one type of anxiety disorder.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is marked by excessive, persistent feelings of anxiety related to a variety of topics or situations. Someone with GAD may experience symptoms like uncontrollable worry or racing thoughts related to aspects of daily life like finances, health, or work. Like other anxiety disorders, GAD is diagnosed when symptoms interfere with your quality of life and functioning.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Social anxiety disorder is characterized by the persistent fear of one or more persistent social or performance-related situations. Someone with social anxiety might avoid social situations, worry about being judged by or humiliated in front of others, and experience other symptoms, like racing thoughts, trouble sleeping, or physical symptoms like shaking or sweating.
Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is marked by recurring (repeated) panic attacks. Panic attacks happen suddenly and can be very scary, involving symptoms such as:
- Impending feelings of doom, intense terror, or feeling like you are going to die.
- Racing thoughts and difficulty thinking clearly.
- Shortness of breath or rapid breathing.
- Sweating, shaking, or trembling.
- Choking sensations.
- Nausea.
Panic attacks (and fears related to future panic attacks) can strain your mental health and quality of life. Panic disorder can occur with or without agoraphobia.
Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by fear or anxiety emerging from situations where one may be unable to escape or where help may be unavailable. Often, this fear is due to the possibility of experiencing embarrassment, humiliation, or panic-like symptoms.
Specific Phobia
Specific phobia is marked by the intense, irrational fear of something, such as a particular object, activity, or situation, that is disproportionate to the actual risk. For example, fear of flying, certain animals, storms, enclosed spaces (claustrophobia), medical or dental procedures, heights, or something else.
Possible Causes of Anxiety
There’s no singular known cause of anxiety, but some factors can increase your risk of having an anxiety disorder. With that in mind, possible causes of anxiety disorders can include but aren’t limited to the following.
- Trauma. Like substance use disorders, having been through traumatic or stressful events can raise your risk of developing an anxiety disorder.
- Genetics and family history. People who have a family history of anxiety disorders may be more likely to develop one themselves.
- Other disorders. People with other disorders–including some physical health conditions–can be more prone to anxiety.
Sometimes, things like high stress levels worsen or trigger anxiety symptoms. Our programs in Ohio will work with you to find sustainable ways to manage life stressors as part of our approach to treatment.
