Trauma Therapy in Cleveland
Trauma therapy can be important for those with a history of any type of traumatic event. While the signs and symptoms of trauma can vary from person to person, they have the potential to impact all aspects of your life. For example, familial and romantic relationships, sleep, physical health, and how you feel emotionally can all be affected by trauma symptoms. Getting trauma therapy can help you overcome the effects of trauma on your life.
Ray Recovery is an outpatient addiction and mental health treatment center in Ohio with effective programs. We provide trauma therapy in Cleveland, and our team is here to help you find a ray of hope and healing.
How Trauma Relates to Substance Abuse and Addiction
Although not everyone who has been through trauma will experience problems with substance abuse, trauma increases the likelihood that you will experience a substance use disorder. This can be particularly true for some groups. For example:
- Those who endure traumatic events early in life (like childhood abuse) can be particularly prone to substance use disorders.
- Those who develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be at an increased risk of substance use disorders.
Drugs and alcohol can be a mode of self-medication for some trauma survivors. If trauma is an underlying cause of or factor in a person’s experience with substance abuse and addiction, it is crucial to find a treatment program able to address both, like our dual-diagnosis treatment program in Cleveland.
Dual-Diagnosis Treatment Centers
Dual-diagnosis treatment centers like Ray Recovery are crucial for people who need help with both substance abuse and co-occurring mental health concerns. By addressing underlying mental health concerns like trauma, we help clients achieve optimal treatment outcomes. For example, dual-diagnosis treatment is linked to better quality of life, improved psychiatric functioning, reduced or eliminated substance use behaviors, and increased rates of housing and employment.

Our Programs
When you get trauma therapy in Cleveland at Ray Recovery, you can be confident in the fact that you’re receiving the best quality of care. When you decide to get treatment at Ray Recovery, we will discuss our programs with you and help you determine the right starting level of care for your needs.
Partial Hospitalization Program
Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) near Cleveland is our highest level of care. Clients in PHP at Ray Recovery come to therapy Monday through Friday for around five hours per day for a total of around 25 hours per week. This level of care provides immersive treatment for addiction and mental health while allowing you to live off-site, whether in sober housing or at home.
Your PHP schedule at Ray Recovery will consist of groups, individual therapy sessions, and other activities, like family therapy sessions. Due to the time commitment required for the program, lunch is provided for PHP clients.
Intensive Outpatient Program
The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Ray Recovery has a lower time commitment than PHP. Clients in our Ohio-based IOP attend therapy less often throughout the week (three days per week vs. five) for shorter sessions. The increased flexibility provided by our IOP makes it an ideal option for those seeking addiction and trauma therapy who:
- Do not need a treatment program as intensive as PHP.
- Have already completed PHP and are ready to transition into a lower level of care.
- Need to balance obligations like work with addiction and trauma treatment.
We also offer virtual IOP for those who find that it is a better fit for their schedule. Specialized programs like our executive IOP are available for working professionals who may have specific needs.
Possible Causes of Trauma
There are many different types of traumatic events. Some traumatic events are ongoing or persistent, like abuse or war, whereas others are singular events. Possible causes of trauma include but are not limited to the following.
- Any form of abuse (verbal, financial, sexual, emotional, or physical).
- Serious physical illness affecting yourself or someone close to you.
- Serious mental illness affecting yourself or someone close to you.
- Loss of a close loved one.
- Natural disasters.
- War and violence.
- Childhood neglect.
- Car accidents.
- Poverty.
If the type of trauma you experienced is not listed above, it does not mean that you don’t need support. Ray Recovery has expert-level clinicians who have experience working with those who have been through diverse traumatic or stressful events.
Signs and Symptoms of Trauma
Trauma manifests differently from person to person. Here are some common symptoms of trauma you might notice in yourself or someone you love who has been through a traumatic event. Remember that these symptoms can continue long after the traumatic event itself has passed but that trauma and PTSD symptoms can improve with treatment.
- Re-experiencing symptoms: Nightmares, flashbacks, unwanted and upsetting memories, emotional distress following reminders of the traumatic event, or physical symptoms (e.g., rapid heartbeat) occurring following reminders of the traumatic event.
- Avoidance symptoms: Avoidance of places, people, things, or feelings associated with the traumatic event.
- Changes in mood or cognition: Emotional numbness, difficulty experiencing positive emotions, growing distant or feeling detached from others, lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed, negative thoughts about yourself, others, or the world, or persistent feelings of guilt, fear, anger, shame, or blame.
- Physical responses and emotional reactions: Being startled or frightened more easily, always being “on guard” for danger, self-destructive behaviors (like risky driving or substance abuse), trouble concentrating, irritability, angry outbursts, or experiencing symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, shaking, or trembling.
If trauma affects your life or well-being negatively in any way, you deserve to overcome it. Getting trauma therapy in Cleveland at Ray Recovery can help.
