Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment in Ohio

Are you looking for addiction and borderline personality disorder treatment in Ohio? Ray Recovery’s team of medical and mental health experts can help. Located in the greater Cleveland area, we treat co-occurring disorders like borderline personality disorder (BPD) alongside addiction. Even better, we accept most forms of insurance. So, what should you know?

This page will cover the relationship between BPD and addiction, the importance of dual-diagnosis treatment, our approach, and our programs. We will also discuss the signs, symptoms, and possible causes of BPD.

How Borderline Personality Disorder Relates to Substance Abuse and Addiction

A staggering 78 percent of adults with borderline personality disorder develop an addiction or substance-related disorder at some point. Often, people with borderline personality disorder use drugs or alcohol to relieve negative feelings or to replace the intense emotional pain seen in the condition with positive emotions.

Considering how borderline personality disorder relates to substance abuse and addiction, it is critical that treatment centers and providers understand and are able to address BPD symptoms. However, not all treatment centers provide dual-diagnosis services.

Dual-Diagnosis Treatment Centers

It is ideal that those facing both addiction and a co-occurring mental health condition like BPD look for dual-diagnosis treatment centers like Ray Recovery. Integrated or dual-diagnosis treatment is linked to positive outcomes, such as better psychiatric functioning, reduced or eliminated substance use, increased rates of employment, and improved quality of life.

Therapies and Treatments at Ray Recovery

Ray Recovery uses the most evidence-based treatments for addiction and borderline personality disorder, such as dialetical behavior therapy (DBT). DBT was created to treat BPD, and the treatment can help with goals such as improved emotion regulation and communication or interpersonal skills.

At Ray Recovery, you’ll get a personal treatment plan adapted to fit your needs. Other therapies and treatments at Ray Recovery include but aren’t limited to the following.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
  • Holistic Treatments (e.g., aromatherapy, yoga, meditation).
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT).
  • Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET).
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
  • Contingency Management.
  • Relapse Prevention.
  • Trauma Therapy.
  • Family Therapy.

We’re here to help you find the most sustainable and effective treatments and lifestyle practices for you or your loved one looking for borderline personality disorder treatment in Ohio. Additional resources, like case management, are also available at our center.

Treatment Programs (Levels of Care)

Here are the main treatment programs (levels of care) offered at Ray Recovery. All of our programs operate on an outpatient basis, so you are welcome to live at home or in sober living* while participating in treatment at Ray Recovery.

*Our team can help you find sober living in Ohio if needed.

Partial Hospitalization Program

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) at Ray Recovery is our highest level of care. Clients in PHP attend therapy at our center for about 25 hours per week. For example, you might come to treatment Monday through Friday for about five hours each day as a PHP client. Our PHP for addiction and borderline personality disorder treatment in Ohio consists of groups, individual therapy, and other treatments outlined in your care plan. Due to the length of sessions, meals are provided for PHP clients only.

Intensive Outpatient Program

The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Ray Recovery has a lower time commitment than PHP. IOP clients come to therapy about three days per week, and sessions are shorter (about three hours each). For example, you might come to treatment on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Some clients at Ray Recovery start with our IOP, but others step down to our IOP after completing PHP.

With increased flexibility, IOP is ideal for clients who wish to balance treatment with work. We offer day and evening IOP schedules so that you can choose the right fit for your schedule.

Virtual IOP

The virtual IOP at Ray Recovery is similar to our in-person IOP. However, virtual IOP sessions meet online rather than face-to-face. Some clients–such as those with busy schedules or those who live far away from our center–find that virtual IOP is an ideal solution for their needs.

Alumni Program

Former clients will have immediate access to our alumni program, which will help you keep healing after treatment is over. Our alumni program offers ongoing support, connections, counseling sessions, seminars, workshops, and access to online forums.

Signs and Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder

One of the most common experiences people with borderline personality disorder have is extreme emotional pain. Additionally, all-or-nothing thinking–for example, having extremely positive or extremely negative feelings toward someone–is a very prevalent experience among people with borderline personality disorder.

Other signs and symptoms of borderline personality disorder can include but aren’t limited to:

  • Efforts to avoid real or perceived abandonment. For example, ending relationships before the other person can or entering relationships that progress quickly.
  • Patterns of intense and unstable relationships with others (e.g., friends, romantic partners, or family members).
  • Impulsive or risky behaviors, such as reckless driving, unsafe sex, or drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Inappropriate or disproportionate anger and problems controlling anger.
  • An unstable, distorted sense of self or personal identity.
  • Dissociation or feeling disconnected from others.
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness.
  • Mood swings.
  • Self-harm.

Some people with BPD have more internalized symptoms, whereas other people with BPD have more external symptoms. People with BPD who tend to internalize their symptoms more can be described as having “quiet BPD,” although the diagnosis will be the same.

What Causes Borderline Personality Disorder?

Trauma is the main factor associated with the development of borderline personality disorder. It is suggested that around 70 percent of people with borderline personality disorder endured sexual, emotional, or physical abuse in childhood, making childhood abuse a significant risk factor. While traumatic brain injury (TBI) doesn’t always lead to BPD, physical traumas like TBI can also play a role in the development of the condition. Other risk factors for BPD include family history or genetics and individual vulnerability. Regardless of what causes BPD, seeking help is essential.
