Personality disorders involve long-term and disruptive patterns of behaviors, thoughts, moods, and challenges like difficulty building or maintaining interpersonal relationships. Some people with personality disorders find that they attempt to self-medicate with substances, which can cause more problems in the long term. Getting integrated addiction and personality disorder treatment in Ohio at Ray Recovery can help.
How Personality Disorders and Addiction Intersect
First, how do personality disorders and substance abuse relate? Here’s some of what we know about how personality disorders and addiction intersect.
- Personality disorders can increase the risk of addiction. Extensive research shows us that if you have a personality disorder like borderline personality disorder or antisocial personality disorder, it increases the likelihood that you will develop a substance use disorder. Statistics suggest that 34.8 to 73 percent of those with personality disorders have a substance use disorder, which is a significant increase compared to the general population.
- Personality disorder symptoms and substance abuse. Personality disorder symptoms can severely impact interpersonal relationships, emotions, beliefs about oneself or others, performance at work or school, and other parts of life. While how this manifests can depend on the type of personality disorder, addressing symptoms of personality disorders–like impulsivity or emotion dysregulation–can empower you to cope without substances.
- Impacts on age of onset and symptom severity. People with substance use disorders may start using substances at a younger age and may face more severe substance use disorder symptoms.
Even though personality disorders can raise your risk of substance abuse, it’s important to remember that both substance use and personality disorders are treatable.

Levels of Care
Here are the levels of care available at Ray Recovery. Please call Ray Recovery if you have any questions about our programs or what they entail.
Partial Hospitalization Program
Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) helps clients facing addiction and co-occurring personality disorders by providing a structured daily schedule of effective therapies. PHP meets five days weekly for about five hours per day. In groups and individual therapy sessions in PHP at Ray Recovery, you may focus on goals or topics like:
- Coping and problem-solving skills for personality disorder symptoms.
- Healthy habits and routines that support mental health and sobriety.
- Interpersonal relationships and communication.
- Relapse prevention.
- Emotion regulation.
We use the most evidence-based therapies for personality disorders. In addition to evidence-based therapies like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), our community-based and person-centered programs use peer support, mind and body wellness, and other practices to provide comprehensive care. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT), family therapy, and other treatments are also available.
Intensive Outpatient Program
The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Ray Recovery uses the same effective approach to addiction and mental health treatment as our partial hospitalization program. However, sessions are shorter and less frequent, lasting about three hours per day, three days per week. Ray Recovery offers day and evening IOP schedules so that you or your loved one can get treatment at a time of day that works for their needs.
Types of Personality Disorders and Symptoms
Learning about the types of personality disorders and symptoms accompanying each diagnosis may help you better understand yourself or the person in your life seeking treatment. Here is a brief overview of the 10 types of currently recognized personality disorders.
Cluster A personality disorders include:
- Paranoid personality disorder. Characterized by mistrust and suspicion of others, people with paranoid personality disorder believe that others are trying to harm, demean, or threaten them in some way.
- Schizoid personality disorder. Schizoid personality disorder is marked by patterns of detachment from and disinterest in forming relationships with others.
- Schizotypal personality disorder. People with schizotypal personality disorder show a consistent pattern of discomfort with and limited need for close relationships. Superstitions, unusual behaviors, and distorted perceptions of reality may hinder their ability to form relationships.
Cluster B personality disorders include:
- Antisocial personality disorder (ASDP). People with ASPD display a lack of respect toward other people and don’t follow socially accepted rules or norms. For example, they may break the law, cause physical harm, or cause emotional harm to others, refusing to take responsibility for their behaviors or disregarding the consequences of their actions.
- Borderline personality disorder (BPD). BPD is marked by trouble with emotion regulation, intense emotional pain, and patterns of intense, unstable relationships. Other symptoms can include but aren’t limited to low self-esteem, mood swings, and impulsivity.
- Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). NPD is characterized by consistent patterns of perceived superiority and grandiosity, an excessive need for admiration or praise, and a lack of empathy for other people. The thoughts and behavior seen in NPD often stem from low self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Histrionic personality disorder. Histrionic personality disorder is marked by unstable, intense emotions and distorted self-image. People with histrionic personality disorder often depend on others for their self-esteem and may have an overwhelming desire to be noticed by others, sometimes resulting in the display of dramatic or inappropriate behaviors.
Cluster C personality disorders include:
- Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). Not synonymous with OCD, OCPD is a condition marked by an ongoing extreme need for orderliness control or perfectionism with no room for flexibility that interferes with the person’s life or ability to complete tasks.
- Dependent personality disorder. Marked by an excessive or constant need to be cared for by others, people with dependent personality disorder may exhibit behaviors like passiveness, clinginess, fear of separation, constant reassurance-seeking, or trouble making decisions for themselves.
- Avoidant personality disorder. People with avoidant personality disorder may have chronic feelings of inadequacy and be highly sensitive to feeling negatively judged by others. They may avoid social interaction due to extreme fears of being rejected.
Like other mental health conditions, personality disorders require a professional assessment for diagnosis to occur. Sometimes, personality disorders can look like other mental health conditions, so a formal evaluation is essential.
